Money Raised at Rotary Trolley Dash Presented
Cheques, each for £400 were recently presented at the Hunting Lodge Hotel, Cottingham, by the Rotary Club of Corby Phoenix to three local organisations. The club’s President, John Dixon stated, “Club members worked very hard just prior to last Christmas to raise funds by selling tickets for a trolley dash at ASDA, and our thanks go to them for their considerable help. These sums are as a result of that project and the club’s commitment that monies raised would be used locally”. The three Corby based organisations are Community Nurses, Age Concern and the Corby Steel Gateway project, which is a club for adults with learning difficulties that meets each Tuesday at the Willow Centre. They will use the donation to provide a coach outing for club members to see the sights of London and possibly a show.

When accepting their cheque, Maggie Earl of Corby Community nurses said that the nurses were based in surgeries throughout the town and that the money received would be used to give comfort to those of all ages with special needs. She explained that their priority was to have a folding commode and ‘Egg shell’ style comfort mattress available for use by patients in their own homes. Age Concern’s local treasurer, John Forshaw explained about difficulties with fund raising but that every penny received is used to help older people with general advice and assistance with form filling, equipment such as wheelchairs and disability aids. ASDA have agreed to allow the club to hold a further trolley dash effort later in 2008. Once again all funds raised will be used within Corby. Club members, who meet at the Hunting Lodge Hotel on Thursday evenings, are planning other fund raising activities during the year. 12.02.08
Tremendous Result from Rotary Trolley Dash
Over twelve hundred and fifty Pounds worth of tickets were recently sold by members of the Rotary Club of Corby Phoenix at the town’s ASDA store. However, the winner of the main prize, which was to be a three minute trolley dash around the store, declined the prize. Corby based Mrs Hayes explained, “I saw the Rotarians working so hard at a busy time before Christmas to raise money for local charities. I know that the contents of the trolley have to be paid for from the sums raised and I’d like as much as possible to go to the charities”.
When presenting the winners’ vouchers at the ASDA store on December 18th, Rotary club president John Dixon said, “This is very kind of Mrs Hayes, which means we will have more money to distribute. However, we felt that as she did win, she was entitled to a prize so we have managed to persuade her to accept a £100 ASDA voucher”. The second prize, an ASDA voucher for £25, which was donated by Mr & Mrs Bennett of Aircare, was won by Mr Russell who is also from Corby.
Trolley dash organiser Rotarian Hugh Mitchell explained, “Thanks to ASDA and our members who have given up a lot of their time, we’ve raised a considerable sum. As promised, it will be divided equally and used locally with Corby’s Community Nurses, Age Concern and Corby Gateway Project benefiting”.
With the ongoing co-operation of ASDA’s management, The Rotary Club of Corby Phoenix, which meets at the Hunting Lodge Hotel in Cottingham on Thursday evenings, hopes to hold a further trolley dash event next year. However, throughout 2008 there will be a number of other fund raising initiatives from which all monies raised will be put to charitable purposes. 18.12.07
A Dash to Charity Success “Sales of tickets for the Rotary Trolley Dash went so well that we are sure to be able to help our chosen Corby charities again this year”, said John Dixon, President of the Rotary Club of Corby Phoenix.
Members of the club spent a great deal of their personal time last Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday selling tickets in the entrance to the Corby ASDA store. The first prize is a dash around the store trying to fill a trolley with as much Christmas fare as possible. There is also a second prize of a £25.00 ASDA voucher.
As John explained, “the winner can nominate who will push the trolley and in spite of the time allowed being just three minutes, it’s perfectly possible to get a great deal into it remembering there can only be foodstuffs and other consumer type goods excluding alcoholic beverages and cigarettes. To win, will certainly be memorable for the winner’s family at Christmas this year”.
The draw will take place during the club’s regular meeting at the Hunting Lodge Hotel in Cottingham, next Thursday evening December 13th, with the winners notified by telephone. The trolley dash will take place on Sunday, December 16th before the store opens. 12.12.07
Corby Phoenix Rotary Club Gets a New President The Rotary Club of Corby Phoenix has a new President. At the recent handover held at the Hunting Lodge Hotel in Cottingham the outgoing President, Alan Biggar, thanked club members for their support, hard work and most of all for the enjoyment throughout the past Rotary year. When accepting the Rotary badge of office, John Dixon the new President, stated that he would continue to encourage the club to give special help to local organisations such as Community Nurses, Age Concern and Lakelands Hospice, all which have been assisted in the past, whilst not forgetting Rotary projects both at home and abroad. In particular, he asked members to continue with the Rotary principles of giving help to others but still enjoying the many benefits membership brings. He reminded members that Rotary is an organisation of almost 1.5 million business and professional men and women united world wide in providing humanitarian service, encouraging high ethical standards in vocations plus helping to build goodwill and peace. Membership is by invitation and is available to those managing their own business, in managerial positions in industry and commerce plus professionals in organisations such as medical or legal practices, accountants and architects. 31.07.07
