What Does Being a Rotarian Really Mean.
Simply : By using our skills and a little of our precious time we can help others in so many ways whilst having a great time in the company of like minded men and women who are all friends.
The following will provide additional information but for an informal ‘chat’ about the possibilities within membership of the Rotary Club of Corby Phoenix please email Mel Jarvis at mel.norma@btinternet.com
What Rotary Means to Me :
“Doing good for others whilst having fun with good friends”.
Corby Phoenix member Alan Biggar
Rotary is short for Rotary International - a worldwide association of local clubs for men and women in business or the professions who
· Provide humanitarian service to the community at local, national and international level
· Encourage high ethical standards in all vocations
· Work for goodwill and peace in the world
But that’s not all. The members of The Rotary Club of Corby Phoenix strongly believe in a further objective and that’s to enjoy ourselves; to enjoy Rotary, the company of each other and the social and fun raising events in which we participate.

Rotary International is a network of service volunteers and is the world's largest service organisation for business and professional people. Founded in 1905 and now has 1.21 million members in more than 28,000 clubs in 168 countries and 35 geographical regions. There are 1,845 clubs in Great Britain and Ireland with over 59,000 members.
What Rotary Means to Me :
“The most important thing for me, is that I find Rotary a great leveller amongst people from a variety of backgrounds, who easily assimilate into a family of friends, who share a common aspiration to help those less fortunate”. Corby Phoenix member Brian Bennett
What Do We Do?
We meet every Thursday evening for dinner, good conversation and, of course some Rotary activity, which could be a discussion about fund raising, participation at an event, an entertaining speaker.
What Have We Been Involved with Recently?
International : As part of the Rotary organisation we help with disaster relief following tragic events such as earthquakes and tsunami. We assist with a number of Third World projects such as Water Aid, Mercy Ships, Motivation and Shelter Boxes and, with the help of local schools, put Shoeboxes together to be sent anywhere following a disaster, famine or other trouble.

Local : All proceeds collected from our annual Trolley Dash at ASDA and from our Wishing Well in East Carlton Park goes to local organisations such as Age Concern & Community Nurses. We help with the Lakelands Hospice, ‘Kids Out’ at Wickstead Park, hold a Stroke Awareness Day in the town centre, collect for Marie Curie and McMillan Nurses, and have regular raffles. We even salvage used printer cartridges, old spectacles and mobile ‘phones, all which we put to good fund raising use.
| Old mobile 'phones and used glasses are salvaged or refurbished and used in the third world |
Then, of course, we have social events such as dinners, games events, BBQs, walks and a great deal more.
What Rotary Means to Me :
"Knowing that anywhere in the world I travel to, I will be welcomed as a
friend plus the opportunity to give something back to and be involved in the local
community."
Corby Phoenix member Adèle Thorpe
ROTARIANS GET INVOVED AS
MUCH OR AS LITTLE AS THEIR TIME ALLOWS
Rotarians, men and women alike, volunteer their efforts to improve the quality of life in their own communities and beyond their communities' borders. The world's Rotary clubs meet weekly and are non-political, non-religious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. Club membership represents a cross-section of local business and professional leaders.
Prospective members must actively hold -or be retired from -a professional, proprietary, executive or managerial position. In other words, they must be responsible for their time whilst in their occupation. They must have the desire and ability to serve, and as far as possible within the constraints of family and business, to meet the club's attendance requirements for its weekly meetings.
What Rotary Means to Me :
"Rotary has been a part of my life since helping to found the Corby Phoenix club in 1988. Thursday night is Rotary and a great way to spend some time with my Rotary friends and plan ways of helping our local community that I simply could not do by myself."
Corby Phoenix member Aidan O'Rourke

An important distinction between Rotary and other organisations is that membership of Rotary is by invitation. However this should not stop anyone who feels that they might like to become a Rotarian from indicating an interest, either by speaking to a Rotarian, or by getting in touch with a local Club, such as the Rotary Club of Corby Phoenix - with no obligation on either side.
